Residents discuss uses for site after cleanup |
The
public may soon be invited to give its input about
what to do after the cleanup of the former Woolfolk
Chemical Works area near downtown.
At a a regular alliance meeting Tuesday, citizens,
representatives from government agencies and the
mayor came together to discuss the Preston Street
and Pine Street area where the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency continues to remove contaminated
dirt from yards and dust from attics.

For more than 80 years, the area was used by chemical-producing
companies. The EPA found water and soil contamination
from the pesticides, herbicides and insecticides
made at the plants. Over the years, wind and water
runoff has carried the chemicals to the residential
neighborhood.
As the EPA cleanup continues, some alliance members
think it's time for the community to learn more
about the site cleanup in an effort to dispell the
stigma of the site, and help make plans ...
